Telegram or WhatsApp: Which one should a Content Creator Use?

Once you have decided which messaging service to use to contact your community and engage with your audience, it is important to touch on the features offered on the Apple or Android applications to see how specific guidelines best fit your goals. Most smartphone users already use WhatsApp, so content creators should also use WhatsApp Web rather than Telegram Web. WhatsApp and Telegram are quite similar, and both have messaging functions, allow users to share files, and have group functions. However, when it comes to content creators, audiences/community engagement, and the dissemination of information, the approaches taken by both apps are entirely different. Having knowledge of how the two companies differ can help you maximize your content creation efforts.

Audience Potential

Content creators and users of any messaging service considering audience creation and potential opt for WhatsApp due to its 2 billion users. Because of its massive audience, messaging for personal use, and audience engagement, WhatsApp is excellent for content creators. As for Telegram, its audience is smaller than WhatsApp, but its users are more interactive and engage as consumers of the content. With a channel, content creators can share info, and with a topic-based group, users can interact with each other. Because of these features, Telegram is more useful than WhatsApp.

Media and File Sharing

Telegram’s most significant advantage for content creators is its effective file-sharing options. Telegram enables users to send files exceptionally large (up to  2GB)  which allows for sharing high-quality files (videos, photos, and documents) without any compression. Compared to Telegram, are also limited to file sizes of 16MB, which is restricting for content creators. As such, Many creators would prefer Telegram to share high-quality video, audio or documents (PDFs) files.

Broadcast Lists vs Channels

With Telegram, content creators can create Telegram Channels. With Telegram Channels, users can send messages to an unlimited amount of subscribers. Unlike WhatsApp, which has a business model that allows users to create Broadcast Lists. The user must save the business number and limit the number of broadcasted contacts. Telegram provides a better advertising engagement experience, so users can create content without sharing their personal contacts.

Automation and Bots

Telegram is also a better app for content creators that want to automate their engagements.  Bots can automate many tasks such as managing subscriptions, scheduling, and content delivery, interactive quizzes, or even automated managing commerce transactions. On WhatsApp, business APIs are also available, but they are often restrictive and require the use of an additional component to automate those processes.

Safety and Security

Both apps claim end-to-end encryption but it’s done in different ways. On WhatsApp, every time someone sends a message, it’s auto-encrypted. So there’s a greater amount of safety for private conversations. With Telegram, end-to-end encryption is only done in “Secret Chats,” and for the other chats, it is encryption in the cloud, meaning the other person can still see it and access it across all their devices. For content creators, especially ones that have a large community, the cloud sync on Telegram is actually really helpful because they can access their messages and any media they send across all their devices without needing to backup devices repeatedly.

Engaging with Your Community

While Telegram makes it easier to create and manage a community, WhatsApp makes it a bit more difficult to have an active community since they do not have a lot of the active community features WhatsApp has. With Telegram, creators have the ability to create and customize a community in a more interactive and engaging way compared to WhatsApp. Things like community polls and unique communication threads and “Secret Chats” allow creators to develop a more loyal fanbase and community on the platform of their choice. Even with large groups, WhatsApp often makes it difficult to manage unlike Telegram, allowing creators to focus on their community.

Ease of Use and Multi-Device Flexibility

Having a Telegram web version makes it easier for content creators to access their channels and groups, including on other devices. WhatsApp has only just implemented the ability to manage from multiple devices which is a major difference compared to Telegram in being able to manage an account from unlimited amount of devices. These features give creators more responsibility to engage with, create, or respond to messages, all of which leads to an enhanced ability for the creator to focus on their work more.

Conclusion

For content creators, the decision on whether to use Telegram or WhatsApp really comes down to their individual goals. WhatsApp is great for personal touch and mass reach, especially with people who are in your contacts. However, for advanced community management, growing a professional audience, and managing mass content distribution, Telegram’s features (like channels, bots, large file sharing, etc.) are superior. Additionally, the ability to use Telegram on the web means that creators can integrate it into their other workflows and stay connected across devices, which is a big win for focused content strategy.
