In early 2011, Vivian’s life took a turn for the better when he discovered rap music after seeing a guy wear a 50 Cent T-shirt which caught his attention. Soon after, one of his friends gave him a CD of tracks by the famous rappers Eminem and 50 Cent. He was in school during this time. He regularly used to listen to their music and was severely inspired by it.
He started writing lyrics and improving his rapping skills in the 11th standard. He used to practice writing verses for over 5 hours daily in order to get it right. Soon, in college, he decided to join a hip-hop group named “Mumbai’s Finest” and was trained under a rapper named “Ace”.
After he graduated from college, his grandmother gifted him a computer and a microphone. He recorded his first-ever song “Coming for You” on his Nokia N8. Soon he released his debut single in 2013- “Yeh Mera Bombay”, naturally it was an instant hit amongst all Mumbaikars.
His next song “Jungli Sher” was an autobiographical rap and was released in the same year. The song was filmed in Mumbai in over 40 different locations using his iPhone. Divine caught the attention of Sony Music India (a record label) while he was performing at the Blue Frog Festival 2014 in Mumbai and shortly after signed a contract with them. The song also went on to win “Best Video Award of the Year” by Rolling stone India.
His mainstream breakout single was “Mere Gully Mein” (trans. In my Street) featuring Naezy; it was titled Mumbai Rap Anthem which came out in 2015. After that, he collaborated with several artists and won a lot of awards too. a noticeable achievement would be winning the Best EDM track of the Year in the GIMA Awards in 2015 for a song he worked on Nucleya with for Nucleya’s album “Bass Rani”. Another song he collaborated with Nucleya on was “Scene Kya Hai ” in 2016.
On 24 March 2016, his debut solo single “Jungli Sher” was released and it ruled the charts because of its raw depiction of the life of the poor in Mumbai. This single opened doors all the way to the BBC 1 Radio Show, ultimately he became the first Indian rapper to rap in Hindi there.
He collaborated with several artists like Raja Kumari. He also started his own company and his own crew, both of which go by the name “Gully Gang”.
