Watch a few rounds at a live baccarat table, and you’ll notice that Player keeps drawing a third card, and Banker often just… doesn’t. In some rounds Banker draws on a 5, and it looks like the dealer’s deciding right then and there.
It’s actually a fixed rule, and it starts with Player’s cards. Then, whatever the player draws decides Banker’s next move. If you’re playing or still learning live baccarat on WClub888, the dealer’s next move won’t catch you off guard — not when Banker draws, and not when Banker stands on a hand you expected to see hit.
How the Player’s Third Card Works
Player stands on 6 or higher, but draws when the first two cards total 5 or less. Add the Player’s first two cards together, then keep only the last digit of the result. A 7 and an 8 add up to 15, and the total is 5, not 15. A 6 and a 9 are also 5.
Add up Player’s first two cards. If it’s 5 or lower, a third card gets dealt. If it’s 6 or 7, that’s the final hand. Hit 8 or 9 and the round stops immediately.
Say Player’s holding a 2 and a 4. That’s 6, and the hand stands. Now make it a 3 instead of a 4 — the total drops to 5, and a third card comes out.
The Banker’s Third Card Rule
The Banker’s rule is easy to follow at first: it draws on a total of 0–5 and stands on 6–7. But that changes once the Player draws a third card — the Banker’s action then depends on the value of that card, too.
That’s because the Banker always acts last. By the time it’s Banker’s turn, the Player’s third card is already sitting on the table, so the rule was built to react to it instead of ignoring it.
Example:
Player draws to 2 + 3 = 5, then draws 4 as the third card. Banker’s total is 6, and stands. Change only the Player’s third card to a 6. Banker’s total is still 6, but now it takes another card. As you notice, you have the same Banker total, but there is an opposite action depending on the Player’s third card.
Banker Draw Rules When Player Has Drawn a Third Card
| Banker Total | Draws When Player’s Third Card Is |
| 0, 1, 2 | Always draws |
| 3 | Anything except 8 |
| 4 | 2–7 |
| 5 | 4–7 |
| 6 | 6 or 7 |
| 7 | Always stands |
Totals of 0–2 always draw, and 7 always stands, so the Player’s third card doesn’t affect either of those. It only comes into play for totals 3 through 6.
Does Knowing the Third Card Rule Improve Your Odds?
Knowing the third card rule doesn’t improve your odds because the dealer follow it the same way every time.
The Banker draw or stand is fixed by rule. Randomness has nothing to do with it, and a fixed sequence never means the table is due.
You can track all the outcomes you want on the baccarat road and look for patterns, but the drawing rule doesn’t care what happened in the last ten hands. Just because Banker has stood five times in a row doesn’t mean a draw is coming. Every hand is dealt the same way, no matter what came before.
Play within your limits. If it stops feeling enjoyable and starts feeling compulsive, step back.
FAQs:
What Happens If Both Baccarat Hands Start With 8 Or 9?
The round ends instantly. If Player or Banker has 8 or 9 on the first two cards, that’s it. Nobody draws a third card.
What Happens When the Player’s Third Card Is a Face Card?
A face card is worth zero. It’s still dealt and still counts as the Player’s third card — it just adds nothing to the total.
What Happens If the Player’s Third Card Makes the Final Total Lower?
That’s normal. Baccarat only counts the last digit of a total. A hand adding up to 16 scores as 6, not 16.
