He had to change his name to Dhanush as he entered film because he shared it with famous Tamil actors, Ilaya Thilagam Prabhu and Prabhu Deva. And thus, Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja became Dhanush. He said in an interview that he was watching Kurudipunal which featured a covert mission – operation Dhanush. He liked the name and chose ‘Dhanush’ as the name to his new turning in life.
Dhanush’s entry into film industry was fatal. He actually wanted to pursue a career in Hotel Management and planned on becoming a chef. He enjoyed cooking a lot. But his elder brother Selvaraghavan, who is now a director, pressurized him to get into acting. When his disapproval found no support he was left with no options but to follow his brother. Thus was the birth of actor Dhanush.
He was introduced as a playback singer in Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan, by its composer Yuvan Shankar Raja. His viral song “Why this Kolaveri Di”, from his 2012 film 3, became the first Indian video song to cross 100 million views on YouTube, shot up his fame world wide. Interestingly, Dhanush wrote the lyrics of this song in just three minutes.
He also debuted in Bollywood through the movie Raanjhanaa in 2013. He also had the fortune to share the screen space with Amitabh Bachchan with his 2015 Hindi film Shamitabh.
